Old Hwy 99N: Oakland Bridge Replacement Project

Construction Phase

Region 3: Southwestern Oregon (Oakland, Douglas)

The Oakland Bridge was built in 1925 and has exceeded its design life. This project will construct a replacement bridge that provides two lanes of traffic and wide shoulders.

Impacts

Traffic Impact

The new bridge will be constructed on a new alignment just north of the 1925 bridge. The old bridge will remain open to traffic until the new bridge is completed in 2024. Most construction will take place outside of the travel lanes, though some intermittent lane and shoulder closures may be necessary.

A single lane of traffic was moved onto the new bridge on Feb. 28. The old bridge is now permanently closed to traffic, and will be removed this spring.

Two lanes open:  As of April 12, Oakland Bridge is open to two lanes of traffic, but drivers can expect intermittent weekday lane closures until construction is completed. Most delays will be brief. Flaggers will provide traffic control as needed.

ODOT will provide advance notice before any work that impacts traffic.

Schedule

Construction began in February 2022, and all work is scheduled to be completed by summer 2024.

Traffic was moved onto the new bridge just before sunrise on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024. A second lane was opened across the bridge the week of April 8-12.

Details

About

The Oakland Bridge is located in Douglas County on Old Hwy 99 (Oakland-Shady Highway) at the northern limits of the city of Oakland. The bridge connects downtown Oakland with Interstate 5 and carries traffic over Calapooya Creek and Central Oregon and Pacific Railroad (CORP).

Oakland Bridge project map

The bridge was constructed in 1925 and has exceeded its useful lifespan. The narrow deck is limited to a single lane with traffic controlled by a signal at each end. This results in frequent delays and bottlenecking.

The bridge requires frequent repairs. Without replacement, it will continue to deteriorate beyond the point that routine maintenance will be enough to keep it open to traffic.

Working in partnership with Douglas County, ODOT will replace the bridge with a new structure containing two lanes of traffic and wide shoulders.
